January 2019 Tollywood Box Office Report

January, usually, is a big money spinner for the exhibitors and distributors . However, January 2019 has given sour memories for many distributors and exhibitors. Checkout the detailed Box-office analysis of January 2019.

The first Sankranti release was NTR Kathanayakudu. Sr. NTR is widely respected and still remains in the hearts of the telugu diaspora across the world. Ever since it was announced, a lot of buzz was created on this project ever since the team announced that  Nandamuri Balakrishna will be playing the role of his father, NTR. Also, director Jagarlamudi Radhakrishna ( Krish) and Balakrishna historical Gautami Putra Satakarni earned critical acclaim and performed well at the box office which further increased the expectations on the magnum opus. Many well known artists were roped in to play guest roles in this film. The opening was below par, but that was expected considering the genre of the film. However, the film dropped heavily on day 2 and the business didn’t rise as much during the festival days resulting in heavy losses for the distributors. The film ended up becoming the 3rd biggest disaster of telugu cinema after debacles like Agnyaathavaasi and Spyder. Although the reviews were good, audience clearly missed lack of emotions. The biopic was filmed as one-sided without showing the rise and fall of NTR which caused a severe disinterest in the audience. Also, many opined that the film should have been released as one film instead of two separate parts. A lot of the film just focused on recreating scenes from NTR’s memorable films but biopic should focus on lot more that. The result of the first part has left the second part in doldrums. There is hardly any hype on the 2nd part, NTR: Mahanayakudu. We will have to see if it can perform better at the box office.
The film  collected a worldwide distributor share of close to 20 crores  The loss of the film is more than 50 c and it’s only the 3rd tollywood film  to have a loss more than 50cr. The other two films which ended up generating more than 50 c losses for the distributors had a pre-release business of more than 120 c but it’s suprising to see NTR Kathanayakudu generate 50 c loss with just 70 c worldwide theatrical business.

The second Sankranti release was the dubbed version of Rajinikanth’s Petta. The film was in the news in AP/TG media for the wrong reasons. The distributor created unnecessary negativity for the film by talking negatively against telugu film producers and distributors. With 3 films already lined up for release, a last minute announcement is never going to guarantee sufficient theatres for the film. In addition, the film was marketed very poorly. It had the least buzz for a Rajini starrer after Kochadaiyaan( Vikramasimha ). The theatrical rights of film are valued at 10 crore in telugu states and It collected a paltry 3.5 c distributor share in AP/TG for the first week. Theatres were added in the 2nd week but by then it was too late. It finished with a closing share of 6.5 c in the telugu states and ended up as disaster. The film had decent talk among general audience and excellent talk among hardcore Rajini fans. However, bad release date killed it’s prospects. It could have easily grossed 25-30 c had it released for a better date like February 1st, a date on which no notable films released.

The third Sankranti release was the Ram Charan starrer Vinaya Vidheya Rama which came with tremendous pre-release hype owing to the fact that it’s Ram Charan’s next release after the box office money spinner Rangasthalam. Also, the combination of Ram Charan and BoyapatiSreenu created huge hype among youth and mass audience since BoyapatiSreenu has a lot of fame in mass centers of the telugu states. The film opened to disastrous talk in A centers and flop talk in BC centers. The film was also subject to trolls in social media. The film opened well in AP/TG and then had a drop. On the festival days, the movie did decently in mass centers in areas like Uttarandhra, Nellore, and Ceded and Godavari Districts owing to the combination of RC-Boya and also to the complete rejection of NTR: Kathanayakudu. Also, the Sankranti blockbuster, F2, didn’t get a release in many d centers which further helped revenue. However, outside AP/TG the film barely performed. In overseas, distributors lost almost everything with a recovery that is about 10%. After rangasthalam, Vinaya Vidheya Rama is a huge fall for Ram Charan in the overseas/ROI market. Openings in Karnataka were good but however due to the the word of mouth, it got impacted by films like F2, Petta, and Viswasam. Overall, the film theatrical rights are valued at 92.3 crores worldwide and collected close to 60 c which is a good number for a disaster but it must be considered that the film has 13 c - 14 c hires which is high and GST returns  added in most of the territories. Exhibitors lost plenty of money on the hired centers. The film can be declared as one of the biggest disasters for Tollywood and Ram Charan.

The fourth Sankranti release was F2, Venkatesh and Varun Tej starrer. F2 proved to be a breath of fresh air for the audience. The film opened with above average to decent reviews but the performance is beyond phenomenal. The film already collected more than twice it’s investment in the telugu states with distributor share that is already above 60 c. It also did extremely well in the overseas market with $2m+ from the USA. ROI is also excellent with centers like Chennai and Bangalore doing well even in it’s 4th week.  Family audience and youth audience have embraced this film whole heartedly primarily due to the return of vintage Venkatesh performance in the comedy scenes. The jodi “V2”of Venkatesh and Varun Tej has worked very well in the entertainment department. In addition, the glamour of Tamanna and Mehreen along with good message about family values is pulling in repeat family audience to the theatres. F2 Is Mini Bahubali For Medium Range Films. The film theatrical rights are valued at 34 crores worldwide and Recoverd more than double Of all Areas and Enters all Time Top10 In Tolkywood .The film is looking to breach worldwide distributor share of 80 c ( a benchmark that only heroes like Prabhas, Mahesh Babu, Ram Charan , and NTR have met).

Republic Day release, Mr. Majnu, was met with lukewarm response at the box office. Though the openings were good and the talk was decent, the film fell drastically from Monday. Though Akhil Akkineni’s improvement in performance has been praised, the audience didn’t find the freshness they were looking for. It looked like a regular rom-com film for the majority of the audience. The film failed to recover 60% Of Theatrical Business and is a washout in overseas . The film theatrical rights are valued at 22 crores worldwide and the film collected a distributor share of close to 12 crores worldwide will end up as another disaster in akhil career.
